To provide information on the concentrations of pollutants in the air, especially particulate matter, in areas far from emission sources, European Union directives have made it compulsory to monitor air quality at regional background stations, especially with regard to the chemical composition of fine particulate matter PM10 and PM2.5 and the concentration of gaseous mercury in the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
